MOE encourages Singapore universities to take in local lecturers

SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan wanted to know the ratio of Singaporean to non-resident faculty members  in the four local universities under tenure and not under tenure. In response, Senior Minister of State for Education Indranee Rajah said that more than one in two tenured faculty members at SMU, NUS and NTU are Singaporeans. For non-tenured faculty members, the ratio is approximately one in six in SMU, one in three in SUTD, and one in four in NUS and NTU. Assistant Prof Tan said that he was disappointed with the low ratio of Singaporeans. "I do agree that the principle of merit should be implemented, but I hope that there is an effort by all universities to develop the Singaporean core. We need people who are committed in the long term," added Assistant Prof Tan.
