Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hian said that Singapore is not prepared to allow dual citizenship at the moment, but that it should keep an open mind. He said that allowing dual citizenship would not strengthen the nation and that Singaporeans should have a long-term commitment to building a future together in Singapore. He was responding to questions raised by SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan on what the preconditions were before Singapore was prepared to accept dual citizenship, and whether the country should keep an open mind with regard to the issue.
