Foreign workers’ levy to increase over the next two years

On the latest round of foreign labour tightening policy, Associate Dean of the SMU School of Economics Professor Hoon Hian Teck commented that even though the tightening resulted in stress for employers, the Government has introduced a generous three-year transitional assistance package which companies should make use of. He also observed that the Government did not put a cap on the foreign worker numbers in the construction sector, but had instead increased the foreign worker levy. He was of the opinion that this was due to Singapore’s need for massive construction projects. Foreign labour is still needed in the sector, albeit at a higher cost.
