SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that it was not surprising that the Worker’s Party (WP) refused to work with the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) as both parties lacked mutual trust. WP needs to focus on the election, thus any collaboration with any other party only serves as a distraction. Assistant Prof Tan added that WP’s decision was also possibly to avoid having to make any concession at the next General Election. He felt that SDP views itself as the second most prominent opposition party. If WP meets with SDP, the former would have acknowledged that SDP was a ‘contender’. Such does not bring any value to WP at all.
