SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s decision to call a snap election in Punggol East demonstrated his exemplary leadership and that he listens to the ground. It would be difficult for people to accuse him of only caring about the interest of the PAP. Assistant Prof Tan also said that PM Lee called for the by-election so that Singapore could put its focus back on pressing issues as soon as possible. Even if PAP loses this by-election, it is unlikely that it will lose in the next General Election. The opposition is likely to cite national issues and the Action Information Management (AIM) saga as evidence that voters need to elect more opposition members, to keep the Government in check and responsive to the needs and concerns of citizens.
