SMU Assistant Professor of Law and Nominated MP Eugene Tan commented on the expulsion of veteran Workers' Party (WP) member Poh Lee Guan over the latter's by-election conduct. He said the fact that WP chose to mete out such a heavy punishment to Poh showed that the party would not condone actions by any member which contravened WP's principles, aims or objectives. By sacking Poh, WP was also sending a clear message to the public that the decision was not made unanimously by the party's central executive council (CEC) and that the 16 members of the CEC were free to express their views or position on the issue. Through such a decision by the majority, WP demonstrated that its CEC is not made up by a bunch of “Yes men”.
