SMU Professor and Director of Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Arcot Desai Narasimhalu pointed out three key strengths of SMEs: the spirit of the entrepreneur, business focus and scalability. He also highlighted three challenges commonly faced by SMEs: differences in leadership style, over-emphasis on profits and lack of knowledge in proactive expansion. Commenting on leadership style with employees, Mr Narasimhalu shared that he had met various SME CEOs who were in praise of SMU students. These leaders have attended innovation management course with the students, and found them to be confident and articulate. He added that such a culture is possible if the leader allows employees to discuss operations and business issues in a transparent way.
