Singapore residents perceive their society as kiasu, competitive, materialistic, self-centred, and elitist, according to a survey of 2,000 Singaporeans by local organisational development firm aAdvantage Consulting, and the Britain-based Barrett Values Centre. SMU Behavioural Sciences Institute Director Professor David Chan pointed out that the survey results may be skewed as some commonly acknowledged values and beliefs such as pragmatism, freedom of religion, multi-racialism and multi-culturalism etc. were not included in the questionnaire. The public should not accept the survey results as a reflection of local values.
