Nominated MP and SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that the Cabinet reshuffle allows for greater clarity of roles among different departments; however, it is too early to comment if this will bring about unnecessary costs. “For example, MCYS oversees way too many areas – there's sports and there's the elderly. It gives the impression that there's a lack of focus and emphasis. Going forward, there will be two different Ministries to oversee these areas – one takes care of “daily” issues, the other one to focus on “ideal” issues. This would be a better and more focused allocation of resources as we tackle the current social problems head-on.”
