Experts weighed in on whether offensive behaviour on the Net was inviting tougher regulation. Last week, seasoned blogger Alex Au, of socio-political blog Yawning Bread had to apologise, erase some blog comments and put up a letter from the Attorney-General's Chambers informing him that the “Woffles Wu case hits a nerve” post was contemptuous of the court. SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan said that the authorities are trying to remind people that "what they say online is governed by the same set of rules in the real world". SMU social media expert Michael Netzley expects to see more of such cases – in which people make controversial comments that run afoul of the law – coming up.
