The level of research in the Social Sciences and Humanities is not as developed as that in Biomedicine and Engineering. The International Academic Advisory Panel (IAAP) commented that Singapore should strengthen research in the Social Sciences so as to serve Singapore's future social and economic development. The IAAP said that talents and research could be developed through a framework for research funding. It also encouraged both government agencies and other stakeholders to contribute towards the development of comprehensive databases in a variety of areas to facilitate and inspire research. SMU President Professor Around De Meyer highlighted that agencies with important data should share such information with social scientists and work with the latter to yield meaningful research outcomes.
