SMU Assistant Professor of Law Jack Lee commented on proposals for a bill to put the law of contempt of court into statutory form. Prof Lee said claims that that the judiciary acts unfairly or with partiality may not cause ?the average person? to lose confidence in it. He noted cases in Canada where conviction for scandalising the court requires a clear and present danger that the statement threatens confidence in the administration of justice. Law and Foreign Minister K Shanmugam earlier revealed the Government was working on the bill in response to a question tabled by [Assistant Professor of Law and] Nominated MP Eugene Tan on Monday.
