Eyebrows were raised as the new varsity started term without filling all 500 places. Despite more than 4,000 applications, the Singapore University of Technology and Design began its term this week with only 340 students, short of the 500 places up for grabs. In comparison, SMU started with 306 students in 2000, while the upcoming Yale-NUS College will take in up to 150 next year.
