Commenting on the coming Budget announcement, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that the voters had given a strong signal in last year's General Election that they had not benefitted from Singapore's economic development. Coupled with the growing income disparity in our society, it could be expected that the government would share more of the nation's economic gains from last year with the population. Such a move would unite people from the different social strata, appease the disgruntled public, as well as bond the population to meet the challenges of an imminent economic slowdown. Although economic growth this year is likely to be curtailed, the government would probably allocate more funds for investments in infrastructures and initiatives or projects aimed at enhancing productivity.
