Dr Ng Eng Hen commented that the group of newly appointed NMPs are highly representative to allow the Parliament to hear the needs of Singaporeans from all walks of lives. SMU Assistant Professor Eugene Tan was one of the familiar faces among the new NMPs. He is also a member of the resource panellist for the SPH Chinese Newspapers Division. When interviewed, Professor Tan said that becoming an NMP is not much different from his role as scholar, researcher and analyst of issues relating to the Singapore government, politics and society. He said that the NMP is a bigger platform and he hopes to provide the Parliament with views in his capacity as a party-free member, to focus on education, political development, civic society and other issues that will affect Singaporeans and not given much attention.
