From April 1, new lawyers will have to spend at least eight hours on learning activities by December before they can renew their practising certificates next year. Under the new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme, a newly-qualified lawyer will need to obtain eight points, which translates to about eight hours of learning activity. Of these, four points must come from attending learning activities conducted by one of 12 accredited institutions. This includes SMU's School of Law. The scheme aims to get lawyers to accept and recognise the importance of continuous learning and will apply to the entire profession in due course.
