A feature article showcasing the community service culture in SMU, the article features Jerry Lewis Ong and Team Kashgar. A third year political science student, Jerry has been actively involved in overseas community service projects and volunteers regularly with the Institute of Mental Health. Team Kashgar was SMU's first team to visit Kashgar, Xinjiang, China and helped the local community set up a Uyghur Cultural Centre to preserve the eroding Uyghur culture. The feature story also highlighted that since the inception of the University in 2000, all SMU students have to fulfill 80 hours of community service. More than half of the students continue to volunteer after meeting the 80-hour requirement, serving 120 to 500 hours or more per individual.
