Commenting on the dispute which erupted over the validity of the Singapore People's Party (SPP) election of its new central executive committee (CEC) on Sunday, political observer and SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that if the constitution of SPP had stipulated that Mr Sin, its former chairman, would need to be present at the party conference to be eligible for the CEC election, then the validity of his election would be called into question. However, this should not affect the legitimacy of other elected CEC members who attended the party conference and thus fulfilled the criteria of the SPP's constitution. However, Eugene Tan also pointed out that such a query should be raised by the cadres and whether any of them would do so remains to be seen. It is baffling that ex-SPP leader Benjamin Pwee is questioning the legitimacy of Sin's election to the CEC.
