Singaporeans with lowest income have felt the pinch from an economic downturn. With our economy slowing, cost of living rising and recent unemployment, more people are seeking help from Members of Parliament. SMU Assistant Professor Eugene Tan provided two possible explanations for this phenomenon. One reason cited is the increased cost of living; and the other is that following the May election, more Singaporeans who previously would not have gone to the MPs are doing so to “test†the ability of their MPs in helping them fight for some form of assistance.
