On August 2, some 100 university students in Singapore, including 12 from SMU, left for Japan on a cultural exchange programme to help the Japanese tourism industry recover after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster. As part of the programme, the students mingled with their Japanese counterparts, visited tourist attractions and summer festivals, and did some volunteer work. This Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Embassy of Japan and Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) contributed $5 million to the programme.
