SMU Southeast Asian specialist [Assoc Prof] Bridget Welsh says the political landscape in Sarawak is different from West Malaysia. It may not be that easy for UMNO to win the state. Currently, Barisan Nasional, (BN) which controls a vast amount of resources, will not find it difficult to mount an election campaign. For instance, they can reach the residents of the inland areas, which will require helicopters. Hence, Prof Welsh points out that BN will still have its edge in the inland areas.
