[14 March 2002] Open House will Feature Exhibitions of Bukit Timah and New City Campuses and Interactive Activities for Potential Students The Singapore Management University (SMU) will hold its first Open House on Saturday, 23 March 2002, to open its Bukit Timah campus to members of the public. This will be the first public event held at the newly refurbished campus since the SMU faculty, staff and students moved in last year. The Bukit Timah campus boasts a long and rich academic history, dating back to 1 June 1928 when it started as Raffles College with 43 students. Many notable leaders of Singapore have studied at this campus including President S.R. Nathan, Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan. At the Open House, members of the public will be free to roam around the campus or join in a campus tour, as well as view a special exhibition at the library, detailing the history of the campus in words and pictures. Besides allowing Singaporeans, particularly those who have studied at the campus, a nostalgic trip back to their past, the Open House will also serve as an information venue for 'A' level and polytechnic students who are considering admission to SMU, and their families. Activities at the Open House are:
All visitors will also receive a free limited edition Sasha's Bear produced exclusively for SMU, while stocks last. The theme for Open House "Uncover your Potential!" reflects SMU's holistic approach to education - adopting a broad-based approach emphasising team building, leadership, social and communications skills. SMU's admissions criteria are also holistic, assessing student's potential not only by academic results but also the SAT1 test, an interview as a personal essay. As limited parking is available at the SMU campus, members of the public are advised not to drive to the Open House. A free Open House bus shuttle service will run between the SMU campus and Newton MRT station every 15 minutes from 9am - 4pm on 23 March 2002. SMU Open House details:
